Ultimate Tab Guide
Read any guitar tab: the six lines, fret numbers, chords and arpeggios, and the symbols for hammer-ons, pull-offs, bends, slides, harmonics and tapping.
What you will be able to play
- Name the six open strings and match each one to its line on a tab staff, with the high E on top.
- Read fret numbers and zeros left to right, and play stacked numbers together as a chord.
- Read an open E, G, D, E minor and C chord from tab and arpeggiate a chord when its name is written above.
- Recognise and play the hammer-on (H), pull-off (P), trill and vibrato markings.
- Read bend sizes from a half step to two whole steps and check a bend against its target pitch.
- Play a bend and release, a bend with vibrato and a unison bend from tab.
- Tell a tied slide from a picked slide, and play a 12th-fret natural harmonic and a tap and pull-off.
Is it for you?
Beginners who can fret a single note and hold a few open chords, and who want to learn songs from tab on their own. No tab experience is needed: the course starts with the names of the strings. It also suits players who already use tab but guess at the symbols for bends, slides, harmonics and tapping. It is not a course in standard notation or rhythm reading, and it does not teach songs: it teaches you to read the tab for the songs you choose.
