Surf and Rockabilly Guitar
Play classic surf, spy and tiki riffs with double picking, palm muting and the tremolo arm, and set up reverb, tremolo and tape echo for vintage tone.
What you will be able to play
- Double-pick at the bridge with the palm resting on it so the reverb splashes like classic surf.
- Play spy and tiki riffs on the low strings with palm muting, downstrokes and chromatic walk-downs.
- Pre-bend into strummed chords with the tremolo arm over A, G, E and a barred B.
- Play full surf pieces in A that mix single-note riffs, barre chords and pinky add-ons.
- Strum a Spanish-flavoured surf rhythm in E minor with amp tremolo and picking-position tone.
- Set a tape echo or delay pedal for slapback and for long chord repeats.
- Choose reverb, tremolo and amp settings for a vintage surf tone.
Is it for you?
Electric players who can play open and basic barre chords, alternate pick on one string and use hammer-ons, slides and small bends, and who want the sound of 60s surf, spy and tiki music. The first riffs are beginner-friendly; the later pieces need barre chords and fast double picking. You need an electric guitar, ideally with a tremolo arm, and some reverb. It is not a rockabilly lead course: rockabilly appears in the tape echo lessons and two bonus lessons only. Not for acoustic-only players.
