Solo Techniques
Solo across the whole neck: the four pentatonic elements, every C minor pentatonic position, the mode shapes and bluesy Mixolydian lines over A7.
What you will be able to play
- Play the E-root and A-root minor pentatonic shapes and both extensions, and link them across the neck in any key.
- Run the extended D minor pentatonic with only the first and ring fingers, getting three notes from one pick stroke.
- Solo over a blues in C in every C minor pentatonic position, from the shape below the 8th-fret box to the 15th-fret A-root position.
- Turn the minor pentatonic shapes into major pentatonic by putting the pinky on the root.
- Play the G Ionian, A Dorian, B Phrygian, D Mixolydian and E Aeolian shapes from memory and move them to other roots.
- Make A blues lines sound Mixolydian over A7 with major-third hammer-ons on the A, G and high E strings.
- Switch between Mixolydian hammer-ons on A7 and plain A minor pentatonic on D9 so the chord change shimmers.
Is it for you?
Intermediate electric players who know the minor pentatonic box with the root on the low E string, can bend a string in tune and use hammer-ons, pull-offs and slides, and want to stop soloing in one box. The first lesson covers the E-root box and its extension, so you only need that one shape to start. The later Mixolydian lessons are advanced and expect the earlier material. Not for beginners still learning chords and their first scale, and not a theory course: the modes are taught as shapes and sounds.
