Blues-rock rhythm guitar from open-string power chords to E7 grooves, 7#9 riffs, chord embellishments, upper structures and spread voicings.
What you will be able to play
- Mute the third in open E, A, D, G and C to get clean power chords under distortion.
- Play rock rhythms on E5, D5 and A5 with cut-offs, pull-offs, octave roots and ringing open strings.
- Improvise E7 rhythm with hammered chords, Esus4, slides and the 3-to-4 hammer-on.
- Play E7#9 in four voicings and use B7#9 as the V chord in a blues.
- Embellish major and minor chords with inversions, sus4, minor 9 and pentatonic notes.
- Comp over an A7 to D7 bass line with upper structures and rootless A13, A9 and A7 voicings.
- Play two-note spread voicings and clean octaves with every other string muted.
Is it for you?
Intermediate electric players who know their open chords and E- and A-shape bar chords, can do basic hammer-ons and pull-offs, and want their rhythm playing to sound like real blues-rock instead of plain strummed chords. A late beginner with solid open chords can manage module 1. It is not a soloing course, and it is not for complete beginners: there are no chord diagrams or tabs, and many shapes are shown rather than spelled out.
