Music Theory Survival Guide
Practical theory on the fretboard: intervals, chord formulas, the chords of a key, and soloing with Ionian, Mixolydian, Aeolian and Dorian.
What you will be able to play
- Name and find every interval from the minor 2nd to the octave from any note on the neck.
- Spell major, minor, minor 7, dominant 7 and major 7 chords from their formulas and build your own voicings.
- List the chords of any major key and find the I, IV and V with the root box shape.
- Analyse a progression by chord number and find its relative minor.
- Tell from the chords whether to use Ionian, Mixolydian, Aeolian or Dorian.
- Turn a pentatonic shape into a mode by adding the two missing half steps.
- Get a bluesy Mixolydian sound over dominant chords with hammered major 3rds and the 6-to-minor-7 bend.
Is it for you?
Players who can already play open chords and a few barre chords, know some note names on the low E and A strings, and feel lost whenever theory comes up. Modules 1 and 2 suit late beginners; modules 3 to 5 are intermediate and assume you already solo with the minor pentatonic and know at least one major pentatonic shape. Not for complete beginners who are still learning their first chords, and not a reading or notation course: there is no standard notation and very little written tab.
