Jamming & Soloing Over Grooves
Solo and comp over one-chord grooves: pentatonic phrasing, arpeggios, funk rhythm, double stops and a full song-solo study.
What you will be able to play
- Build a solo over a one-chord groove that starts simple, leaves space and climbs to a clear peak.
- Use a pivot note and quick target-note slides to turn minor pentatonic runs into melodies.
- Slip a B minor 9 arpeggio and the arpeggios of G major into minor pentatonic solos.
- Play tight sixteenth-note funk on E9 and A7 with muting, accents on 2 and 4 and staccato releases.
- Play minor funk vamps in B, G and C minor with minor 7, minor 6 and minor 9 colours.
- Follow the tonal centres of a song solo and build motifs that change on each repeat.
- Set a delay at full level and play a rhythmic figure that locks in with the repeats.
Is it for you?
Intermediate players who know at least one minor pentatonic shape, can play barre chords, bend and slide, and want to sound musical when they jam instead of running scales. Rhythm players who want funk vocabulary get a full module of it, but you need steady sixteenth-note strumming first. A wah pedal and a delay are used in a few lessons and are not needed for the rest. Not for beginners, and not a step-by-step technique course: most lines are demonstrated rather than written out, and the last technique lesson is advanced.
