Intro to Jazz
Jazz chords from both string roots, major and minor 2-5-1s, a jazzy blues in Bb and your first jazz licks over the changes.
What you will be able to play
- Play major 7, minor 7, dominant 9 and half diminished chords with the root on the low E and on the A string.
- Play major 2-5-1s in C, Bb and D and find a 2-5-1 in any key by locating the 1 chord first.
- Play minor 2-5-1s such as Bm7b5, E7#9, Am7 and choose between a 7#9 and a 7b9 on the 5 chord.
- Build the seven chords of a major key in C, A and G.
- Comp through a jazz-standard progression in Bb and G minor from two different string roots.
- Play the jazzy blues in Bb with Bb13, Eb9, the Edim7 passing chord and a 13-chord turnaround.
- Play 2-5-1 licks in C and D major with chromatic passing tones and move them to other keys.
- Use Mixolydian licks over C7, C13, A7 and A13.
Is it for you?
Players who already know E-shape and A-shape barre chords, can find root notes on the low E and A strings, and want to understand jazz harmony and start playing jazz lines. Blues, funk and rock players looking for richer chords will get a lot out of the first two modules. The licks module expects hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides and alternate picking. Not for complete beginners: despite the old series name this is intermediate material (Marty says so himself), and there is no open-chord or barre-chord technique teaching. The licks are shown rather than written out.
