Gypsy Jazz Guitar
Gypsy jazz from the right hand up: rest-stroke picking, minor-swing rhythm with Am6, Bb6 and E7/B voicings, diminished runs over E7 and classic licks in A minor and A, D and F major.
What you will be able to play
- Pick arpeggios across all six strings with gypsy rest strokes, using a downstroke on every string change.
- Play the A, Am, G, Gm, F and Fm arpeggio workout and finish it with a diminished run over E7.
- Accompany a minor swing in A with Am6, Bb6, E7/B and C6 in a soft brushed or a driving staccato feel.
- Replace plain A minor and D minor chords with Am6, Am6/9, D9, C6, F6, G9 and the B diminished 7th shape.
- Move a three-note diminished triad over E7 up the neck in minor thirds with one up-stroke and one falling downstroke.
- Play complete gypsy jazz lines over E7 to Am, A7 to Dm, Bm6-E7-A6 and G7-C7-F6.
- Outline Am, Bb and E7 with matching arpeggios over a slow swing rhythm track.
Is it for you?
Players who already know their open and barre chords, including seventh chords, can strum steady quarter notes and can pick single notes with confidence, and who want to learn the gypsy jazz sound properly. You do not need jazz theory or a gypsy jazz guitar to start, though the course explains both. It is not for complete beginners, and it is not a song course: you learn the devices, rhythm and licks the style is built from, not whole tunes.
