Fusion & Funk Guitar
Funk rhythm with 9, 7#9 and minor triad chops on a steady 16th-note hand, then bluesy fusion lead colours over dominant chords.
What you will be able to play
- Play E9 with its root on the A string and choose which 16th notes sound by squeezing and relaxing the chord.
- Mix E Mixolydian single-note fills with E9 chord hits in one small area of the neck.
- Play funk grooves on D7#9 and an upper-register F#7 and F#7#9, and move them to the IV chord.
- Replace a full B minor barre with Bm, Bm7 and Bm6 triad chops on the top three strings.
- Switch between A minor and F# minor pentatonic over A7 and hear the difference before you play it.
- Use the voodoo blues scale over D7 and D major, E minor 7 and F# minor 7 arpeggios over A7.
- Build a funk part around E7 from small intervals, double stops and octaves, keeping it tight and small.
- Play a half step above or below the E triad over E7 and resolve so the 'out' notes sound intentional.
Is it for you?
Intermediate electric players who can hold barre chords, know the minor pentatonic scale in at least one position and have done some blues soloing, and who want to add funk rhythm and fusion colours. The course now starts with a full funk basics lesson, so you do not need any funk experience. The last lessons (the rootless voicing and arpeggios, Oz's E7 shapes and playing outside) are advanced. Not for beginners: there is no help with basic chords, strumming or the pentatonic scale, and there are no tab sheets.
