Play any major, minor, 7, 9 or 13 chord from its root on the E or A string, and voice progressions with small triads on the top three strings.
What you will be able to play
- Sort any chord symbol into major, minor or dominant and know which shape family to reach for.
- Find any major, minor or 7 barre chord from its root on the low E or A string.
- Play a G, C, Em, D progression in two sets of voicings without leaving one area of the neck.
- Explain what the 7, 9 and 13 in a chord name mean and count them up the Mixolydian scale.
- Swap between 7, 9 and 13 voicings over a blues I-IV change and embellish them with the pinky.
- Play major and minor triads on the top three strings anywhere on the neck.
- Name and play at least five different G major and A minor shapes across the fretboard.
Is it for you?
Players who strum open chords, can hold an E-shape and A-shape barre chord (even if not perfectly) and want to understand the chords they play instead of memorising shapes one by one. Ideal for band and jam players who see 7, 9 and 13 chords on charts and freeze. Not for complete beginners: you need open chords and basic barre chords first. It also does not cover scales, reading music or lead playing.
