Fingerstyle from the first rest stroke to p-i-m-a arpeggios, an alternating thumb bass and fingerpicked progressions on open chords.

What you will be able to play

• Plant the picking hand and play clean rest strokes and free strokes with the thumb, i, m and a.
• Play the open A minor and C major scales and two moveable major scale shapes with alternating i and m.
• Keep a p-i-m-a arpeggio pattern steady while changing between Am, C, G7, A and E.
• Play a steady alternating thumb bass with pinches on E7, A and B7.
• Fingerpick a C – C/B – Am – F – G progression with a walking bass line.
• Mix thumb strums, index strums and a percussive pluck-brush-slap into fingerpicked chords.
• Practise every pattern with a metronome and track your tempo in a practice log.

Is it for you?

Beginners who can hold the common open chords (Am, C, G, D, E, Em and Dm) and change between them slowly, and who want to play with their fingers instead of a pick. No fingerpicking experience is needed: the course starts with the right hand alone. Players who already strum and want a prettier, more melodic sound will also find it useful. It is not a strumming course (the strumming lessons are an optional extra), and it is not for experienced fingerpickers looking for advanced Travis-style or solo-guitar arrangements.
