Bass Guitar Fundamentals
Learn 4-string bass from the first tuning to root-fifth grooves, major and minor scales, a 12-bar blues, walking lines, slap and pop, and harmonics.
What you will be able to play
- Tune your bass with a tuner, the 5th-fret method and harmonics, and restring it one string at a time.
- Read bass tab and pluck with a steady rest stroke while your thumb keeps the idle strings quiet.
- Find any note on all four strings with its fifth and octave, and build root-fifth-octave grooves.
- Count and play whole, half, quarter, eighth and sixteenth notes in time with a drummer.
- Play the major scale across the neck, its relative minor, and A minor pentatonic in three positions.
- Play a 12-bar blues in G and walk a 1-4-5 in D with a chromatic turnaround.
- Slap and pop octave grooves, mute cleanly with both hands and play natural harmonics.
Is it for you?
Complete beginners on the 4-string electric bass, and guitarists picking up bass for the first time. You need nothing but a bass, an amp or headphone amp and a tuner: the course starts with the names of the strings. Players who already know their way around the neck can start at the scales or the blues module. It is not a course in reading standard notation, it does not cover 5-string or fretless technique, and the advanced slap and harmonics lessons are a first taste rather than a complete funk course.
