Acoustic Blues & Slide Guitar

Acoustic blues from the 12-bar shuffle to turnarounds, Delta boogie, blues in D, open G, E and D tunings and slide in standard and open tunings.

What you will be able to play

• Play a 12-bar blues in E with a walking shuffle, palm muting and a B7 turnaround.
• Play open-position E minor pentatonic and blues-scale licks with pull-offs, trills and double stops.
• Dress up an acoustic E blues with upstroke double stops, hybrid picking and a fingerstyle thumb bass.
• Play more than ten turnarounds in E and A, from easy G-string slides to E9-D9 and walking-bass versions.
• Keep a Delta boogie in A going with your thumb while dropping high-register fills into it.
• Play an acoustic blues in D with double stops, 7th chords, bass walks and a drop D riff.
• Tune to open G, open E and open D and find dominant 7th chords and blues riffs in each.
• Play slide licks in standard tuning and in open D, G and E, in tune over the fret wire and cleanly muted.

Is it for you?

Acoustic players who know their open chords, including E7, A7, B7, D and G, can change between them in time and are ready to fingerpick with a steady thumb. The first two modules suit an advanced beginner; from the turnarounds on, most lessons are intermediate. Good for anyone who wants Delta, Piedmont and Chicago blues sounds on an acoustic, and for players curious about open tunings and slide. Not for complete beginners: there is no chord or strumming instruction, and many licks are demonstrated rather than written out. It is not an electric lead-guitar course and it teaches techniques and licks rather than full songs.
